Noc má svůj dům a svůj práh: Hésiodos, Odysseus a tři otázky tmě

🌑 Odysseus vykopal jámu a čekal.

Není to starověký obřad.

The Night Has a House and a Threshold: Hesiod, Odysseus and Three Questions for the Dark

🌑 Odysseus dug a pit and waited. Into it he poured milk with honey, wine and water, sprinkled flour over them, and let the blood of a sacrificed sheep run in. The dead wanted to drink from it, and he held them back with his sword, because the seer Tiresias had to speak first. Only after him did Odysseus’s mother drink and recognise her son. Three times Odysseus rushed to embrace her, and three times she slipped through his arms like a shadow or a dream.

Jung used the Greek word nekyia for the journey of consciousness inward, into the deeper layers of the unconscious. That is the name of exactly this rite from the eleventh book of the Odyssey, the summoning and questioning of the dead. And in his alchemical studies he writes that one does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.

That sentence can be laid against an ordinary room.

🚪 First argument: Night has a house.

In the Theogony, Hesiod tells that Night is born of Chaos and that her children are Sleep and Death. They live in her house, behind a great bronze threshold. Night and Day meet on it, greet one another and pass. The house never holds both at once: one always stays inside, while the other walks the earth.

Anyone who works with space knows that a threshold is not an ornament. It is the place where it is decided what enters the house. Hesiod put it between Night and Day, so that they would not meet under one roof.

🛰️ Second argument: we let Day across the threshold.

Night shines today. According to his post on the network X, the astronaut Don Pettit has documented for twenty-three years across four missions how city lighting changes from sodium lamps to LEDs. The older pictures show street grids in orange-yellow, the newer ones glow whiter.

In a single home the same thing shrinks to one small LED. A study led by Lu Qi of Tulane University and published in the European Heart Journal followed more than eleven thousand people from the British database UK Biobank. Light above three lux during night hours was linked to a left ventricle wall thicker by 1.5 percent among those most exposed to it. Three lux is at least ten times brighter than the brightest full moon, that is, the light that the night chose for itself.

I am not saying that light is the enemy. The study is observational, it measured light at the wrist, not in the street, and it shows a link, not a cause. Hong Kong even kept its sodium lamps, and not every city glows cold. It only seems that it was not Night who let Day across the threshold.

🌙 Third argument: you can put questions to the dark.

This is not an ancient rite. It is my adaptation of the image, and you can change it as you like. Switch off the light, sit on the edge of the bed or on a chair, and ask the dark three things. Do not wait for an answer in words. Just let it pass by, the way a shadow passed.

The first question: what did I overlook today. The second: what in me shone brighter today than it needed to. The third is Odysseus’s own: where am I actually returning home to.

Odysseus did not touch his mother even on the third attempt. The dark cannot be embraced or held. It can only be asked, and allowed to answer in its own way.

The night does not need us to light it. It needs a threshold on which we say goodbye to the day. Tonight, once you switch off the light, try asking.

Which three questions would you put to the dark tonight? Write them in the comments, I may borrow one of them.
