Runy v těle (Runes in the body)

ᚠ Runa je tvar a tvar je tělo. Vstupte do severského znaku celým postojem, nechte ho dýchat taoistickým dechem a jeho písmo se stane tělesnou praxí. Metoda propojuje 24 run staršího Futharku s archetypy čínských znaků.

🌿 Zahrada břevnovského kláštera má zvláštní talent. Vypadá jako jedno místo, a přitom jich ukrývá desítky. Stačí zahnout za živý plot a máte zákoutí, kde vás nikdo neruší a kde ani vy nerušíte nikoho. Před patnácti lety jsem tam chodíval cvičit.

Jednoho pozdního odpoledne jsem si s sebou přinesl knihu o runách, dočetl kapitolu o Fehu, odložil ji do trávy a zkusil ten znak postavit z vlastního těla.

A moje tělo ji ten den v zahradě rozeznalo dřív, než si ji hlava stihla vyhledat.

Dvě abecedy, jedno tělo

🌏 O tom, proč runy staršího Futharku a čínské znaky sdílejí stejnou archetypální mapu, jsem už psal (odkaz dole v použitých zdrojích). Fehu a 牛 mluví o hojnosti jako o toku, Laguz a 水 o vodě jako o intuici, Sowilo a 日 o slunci jako o vědomí.

Do těla. Není to ani léčebný ani duchovní systém cvičení. Léčení i duchovno mohou přijít až potom.

Heimdallův aett vede skrze zkoušky, napětí a přerod, učí stát v bouři místo utíkání před ní.

Nádech míří do hrudníku, výdech odchází skrze dlaně, pětkrát. Otázka zní, co mi proudí životem a co mohu dávat, aniž bych se vyčerpal. V čínském zrcadle stojí 牛, dobytčí síla jako obraz životní energie.

Druhou ukázkou je Laguz, runa vody. Tělo vzpřímené, ruce jemně vpřed, dlaně nakloněné vzhůru, jako by z nich stékal proud. Nádech do spodního břicha a výdech ústy se zvukem tichého „ššš", šestkrát, jako plynoucí voda. Naproti stojí znak 水 a s ním nejčistší taoistický princip celé sestavy, protože voda je v čchi-kungu učitelka měkkosti a metoda vody patří k základům taoistické vnitřní práce.

Venku hledejte místo chráněné před větrem, protože proudění vzduchu ruší jemné vnímání v těle, a pokud to jde, cvičte naboso.

A norská tradice Stav rodiny Hafskjoldových pracuje s runovými postoji dodnes, čerpá ovšem z šestnácti run mladšího Futharku a její moderní podoba nese silný otisk japonských bojových umění.

Oběma liniím patří můj respekt. Můj vlastní přínos leží jinde. Jde o první metodu, která propojuje všech čtyřiadvacet run staršího Futharku s archetypy čínských znaků a pracuje s nimi skrze taoistický dech a tonglen. Evropa dala tvar, Asie dala proud energie. Teprve spojením obou dohromady vzniklo cvičení, které mluví oběma jazyky zároveň.

Tři dechy do dneška

Dnes večer, až odložíte všechny zmatky světa a telefon, si stoupněte doprostřed pokoje. Nohy na šířku boků, ruce zvednuté před tělo, dlaně otevřené vpřed. Fehu. Nadechněte se nosem do hrudníku, vydechněte skrze dlaně a u třetího výdechu si v duchu položte otázku, co vám proudí životem.

Dejte mu příležitost a odpoví i vám.

Runes in the Body: A Practice That Merges Norse Symbols with Taoist Breath

A rune is a shape, and a shape is a body. Step into the Norse symbol with your whole stance, let it breathe with Taoist breath, and its script becomes an embodied practice. The method connects the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark with the archetypes of Chinese characters.

🌿 The garden of Břevnov Monastery has a peculiar talent. It looks like a single place, yet it hides dozens within it. Just step around a hedge and you'll find a corner where no one disturbs you, and where you disturb no one. Fifteen years ago I used to go there to practice.

One late afternoon I brought along a book on runes, finished the chapter on Fehu, set it down in the grass, and tried to build that symbol out of my own body. Feet hip-width apart, arms raised in front of me, palms open forward. The rune's two diagonal lines turned into arms.

And then came a question that hasn't let go of me since. Fehu means cattle, wealth, the flow of life force. What does the sign that says the same thing in Chinese actually look like? At home I looked up the answer and sat there, stunned. The character 牛, cow — a head with horns. Two cultures that never met drew the same idea. And that day, my body recognized it before my mind managed to look it up.

Two Alphabets, One Body

🌏 I've already written about why the runes of the Elder Futhark and Chinese characters share the same archetypal map (link at the bottom, among the sources used). Fehu and 牛 speak of abundance as flow, Laguz and 水 of water as intuition, Sowilo and 日 of the sun as consciousness. Anyone who wants the full parallel can find the link at the end of the article. Here, one sentence will do. Archetypes are born from repeated evolutionary human experience, which is why different cultures arrive at them independently, and identically.

The question I spent fifteen years of practice living with was: "How do I bring that knowledge back to where it came from?" Into the body. Runes and pictographs alike were drawn by a hand imitating a stance, a gesture, a movement. It believed that the body is, in essence, a script — a script that describes the state of the body through movement recorded in its posture. This isn't a healing system or a spiritual system of exercise. It's simply becoming aware of yourself to whatever degree you're capable of in that moment. Healing and spirituality can come afterward, if they come at all.

Why am I saying this out loud now? Because it's the Year of the Fire Horse. This horse doesn't stand at the trough — this horse bolts out of the stable every morning, full of energy. A year that, according to old Chinese tradition, sets new things in motion is the ideal moment to let out of the stable a method that, until now, has lived only in the quiet of one garden and on the pages of my exercise website.

How a Rune Breathes

✨ The method arose at the crossing of three paths I walked separately for a long time. Tibetan tonglen taught me that breath carries more than air — that what hurts, and what heals, can both be carried on it. Taoist qigong taught me flow: the ability to let energy move through the body instead of clenching around it. And the runes gave me form — twenty-four precise bodily postures that Europe has held in memory longer than the Latin alphabet.

For a long time I kept those three practices separate, the way you keep separate drawers, because it never occurred to me that they might speak to each other. Not until that afternoon in Břevnov with Fehu showed me they'd been speaking the whole time, just each in a different language. I then spent another fifteen years translating.

I tested which breath belonged to which shape, how many cycles each rune called for, where the body needed mirrored repetition and where a single held moment was enough. At the point where the three paths finally crossed, a finished practice stood one day, complete.

The twenty-four runes are traditionally divided into three groups of eight, so-called aetts, and only in the body does a person understand that this division is, in fact, a map of a journey. Freyr's aett works with everyday life, relationships, and grounding — it's a return to bodily presence and to the joy of it.

Heimdall's aett leads through trials, tension, and transformation; it teaches you to stand in the storm instead of running from it. And Tyr's aett is the story's resolution — a return to oneself, but changed, with the maturity, trust, and light carried home from the previous sixteen gates. Whoever has passed through all three has, in miniature, walked the whole hero's journey. Only instead of a sword, they carried their breath.

The principle behind every exercise is simple, and rests on five steps

  • You enter the position slowly and consciously, as if walking into a room you're seeing for the first time.
  • Once in it, you ask the body where it feels tension, and where the breath is flowing.
  • Then comes the breath itself — inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth, three to seven cycles depending on what the rune calls for. And if it feels different, let the body take over and stay in the pose for as long as feels good to you.
  • The fourth step is awareness, because every posture carries one archetypal question.
  • And finally, you exit the position just as slowly as you would descend from a sacred place. No acrobatics, no performance. A return.

💨 Two examples, standing in for all the rest. Fehu, the rune of abundance, opens the whole sequence. Stand upright, arms raised in front of the body, palms open forward. The inhale moves into the chest, the exhale leaves through the palms — five times. The question is: what flows through me as life, and what can I give without depleting myself? In the Chinese mirror stands 牛, the ox's strength as an image of life energy.

The second example is Laguz, the rune of water. Body upright, arms gently forward, palms tilted upward, as if a stream were pouring from them. Inhale into the lower belly, exhale through the mouth with a quiet "shh" sound, six times, like flowing water. Facing it stands the character 水, and with it the purest Taoist principle of the whole sequence, because water is the teacher of softness in qigong, and the method of water belongs to the foundations of Taoist inner work. Anyone who feels their shoulders release on the exhale during Laguz has understood more in six breaths than in ten chapters of holy books.

The setting, meanwhile, plays a bigger role than you'd expect for such an unassuming practice. At home, a patch of carpet and a moment when no one wants anything from you is enough. Outdoors, look for a spot sheltered from the wind, since moving air disturbs the body's subtle perception, and if possible, practice barefoot.

Loose clothing, silence or music that supports the inner landscape. I like to practice best early in the morning or in the early evening, when the light softens and the day hasn't yet started shouting — or has just stopped. The garden of Břevnov Monastery remains my first choice of place, but fortunately the method also works in a panel-block apartment.

I won't spell out the remaining twenty-two runes here — this article is meant to be an invitation, not a manual. The complete set of all 24 exercises, including diagrams of the positions and accompanying music, is freely available on my website, tonglen-tao.cz.

Who It's For, and Where It Comes From

🧭 Now for the most important part: who this practice is actually for. The whole sequence takes place in a grounded standing position. No mats, no floor positions, no dynamic movement. Yoga, with all due respect to it, spends most of its time on the floor. This practice works a level up. The only movement is the breath, and the occasional slow shift in posture.

That makes it accessible to people for whom lying on the ground doesn't work, whether due to age, joints, or simply preference, while still being deep enough for those who bring years of movement practice with them. The power of the method doesn't lie in stretching muscles. It lies in connecting emotion with the body, and in anchoring yourself within it. Posture gives emotion a shape, breath gives it a passage, and the body remembers both longer than the mind does.

That's why something happens with this practice that rarely happens with ordinary exercise. When, for instance, someone stands in Isa, the rune of ice, completely without movement, they suddenly feel where in their life they themselves have frozen. Or they hold Naudiz, the rune of necessity, arms stretched in two opposing directions, and the body shows them, without a single word, a conflict the mind has spent months successfully avoiding.

The archetype speaks from within before the inner commentator has a chance to drown it out. That's the reason such simple standing can be so powerful — at least where you're willing to listen. The emotion gets an address in the body, the breath opens the door to it, and the person leaves more grounded than they arrived. The old practice of Wu Chi ("standing like a tree") makes an excellent foundation for these exercises.

In fairness, it should also be said that this method doesn't grow out of nowhere. Bodily work with runes was already developed by the German researcher Friedrich Marby, whose rune gymnastics combined rune postures with breath. And the Norwegian tradition of the Hafskjold family's Stav still works with rune postures today, though it draws on the sixteen runes of the Younger Futhark, and its modern form carries a strong imprint of Japanese martial arts.

Both lineages have my respect. My own contribution lies elsewhere. This is the first method to connect all twenty-four runes of the Elder Futhark with the archetypes of Chinese characters, working through them by way of Taoist breath and tonglen. Europe gave the form, Asia gave the flow of energy. Only by joining the two together did a practice emerge that speaks both languages at once.

Three Breaths, Starting Today

💜 I promised an invitation, so you should leave with something tangible. Tonight, once you've set aside all the world's confusion, and your phone, stand in the middle of the room. Feet hip-width apart, arms raised in front of the body, palms open forward. Fehu. Breathe in through the nose into the chest, breathe out through the palms, and on the third exhale, silently ask yourself: what is flowing through me as life? Three breaths, one rune, one question.

Nothing more is needed today. Just let the answer come. Feel free to write and tell me what came to you.

I still love returning to the Břevnov garden. The book of runes, admittedly, hasn't lain in the grass for a long time now, but the question from that afternoon still works inside me. That day, my body answered before my mind did. Give it the chance, and it will answer you too.
